Tips on Buying a String Trimmer!

!±8± Tips on Buying a String Trimmer!

After my garden tiller broke down last year, I found the easiest way to keep weeds out of my tomatoes was to cut them down with a motor powered string trimmer. It worked and I only lost three plants by decapitation the whole summer!

By nature I'm a lazy man and I really didn't want to have to hoe the entire garden by hand. My idea of using the weed trimmer came because it seemed like a simple way to get rid of the weeds, at least down to the roots.

My first step was to buy a new grass cutter that would make the job easier. After visiting several hardware stores and lawn supply merchants, I developed a few tips on what to look for in a trimmer:

.01 Select the string trimmer that is right for the job. If you only have a small amount of grass to trim, don't purchase a monster machine unless you just want to impress your neighbors. Get the right one for the job and both you and the grass will be happy.

.02 Decide whether you need an electric grass trimmer or a gasoline powered device. If you are only giving a small lawn a trim around the ears, then the electric is the right one for you. If you don't have a long extension cord, then maybe a cordless weed trimmer is the answer for your light cutting needs. Most of them will run from 20-25 minutes on a charge.

I like gasoline engines on string trimmers because using an electric or cordless machine just doesn't seem manly. After all, yard work is supposed to be a man's job and it seems sort of sissified to rely on a trimmer that has to be plugged into a socket or runs on a battery.

Bigger and more rugged terrain requires a larger trimmer with a heavier cutting line, .080 or larger. If you really have a rough plot of ground that is cluttered with brush and finger sized trees, you may need a steel cutting blade or a small chain adapter that will cut heavy vegetation.

.03 Then there are weed whackers disguised as lawn mowers; grass trimmers on wheels. We have all seen the television ads of a smiling farmer type guy pushing a walk-behind string trimmer, busily cutting weeds, trees and shrubbery as if he were using a bush hog. Bush hogs are a heavy steel mower attachment that is pulled behind a heavy tractor that can cut through brush and even small trees.

.04 Four-cycle engines: The big problem for me with the standard two-cycle engine that has been on the market for years is keeping the oil to gasoline mixture perfect, which has been almost impossible for me to do. These small motors never seem to run correctly after the first tank of gas.

I have recently discovered the four-cycle grass trimmer that does not run on a gas/oil mixture. Treat it like your old reliable lawn mower that always starts after the second pull. Just put oil in the designated slot and enjoy the power.

.05 Don't forget the safety glasses! As far as outdoor labor is concerned, I have lived by the WWJW rule. For the uninitiated that stands for What Would John Wayne Do? This line of reasoning has not always served me well for I have destroyed a couple of pairs of glasses from pebbles and stones kicked up by the trimmer.

Buy a trimmer that you want to have fun with and enjoy your gardening or lawn work.

How to Build an Outdoor Fire Pit

!±8± How to Build an Outdoor Fire Pit

What better way to light the night and ward off the chill of winter than sitting in front of an outdoor firepit with a steaming cup of cocoa? Building a fire pit is labor intensive but a great way to add beauty to the backyard. Here are a few tips for how to build an outdoor fire pit using natural stone.

Before starting the build there are a few safety items to keep in mind. Digging up the backyard can be hazardous without some precautions. Be sure to call your utility companies to come out and check for any buried lines, or pipes. You don't want to end up rupturing a gas line or hitting a sewer pipe! The other concern is building the fire pit away from any overhead obstructions. Catching a tree or roof on fire is a really fast way to spoil an evening in front of the fire pit.

If you're looking to put in a large fire pit then you might want to consider renting a small backhoe. They aren't cheap but it certainly makes life easier. You won't break your back shoveling and you'll have the hole finished in only a couple bucket loads.

Now that you've got a huge hole in the backyard it's time to pretty it up.

The first step is to line the sides and bottom of your new fire pit. Landscape shops will have a great variety of natural stone available. For the sides of the fire pit use some flat stone such as slate. This will help shed water and funnel any runoff to the deepest part of the pit. You can cement the stones into place for added strength.

For the bottom of the pit just pour in a couple inches of gravel. The gravel will help with drainage and you won't have to worry about having a muddy mess at the bottom.

Once you've finished up with the walls and bottom of the fire pit it's time to tie the whole thing together with a decorative border. Pour another layer of gravel a few inches deep around the entire edge of the fire pit. An attractive option is to use really large smooth rounded rocks, almost boulders for the edge. Be careful they're heavy. Place the rocks all along the outside edge of the hole. You'll want to wiggle them back and forth to make sure they nestle into the gravel.

The next step is to fill in any gaps between the stones with smaller sized rocks. Keep working your way down in size until you have a uniform rock wall edging completely encircling the fire pit.

The only thing left to do is clean up! All the dirt you dug out of the fire pit can be used to start a garden, build a raised flower bed, or fill in any depressed spots in the yard.

There you have it, how to build an outdoor firepit using natural stone. It's an exhausting task but one you'll be able to enjoy all year long. Just add wood and cocoa!

Should You Buy a Secondhand Gas Hedge Trimmer?

!±8± Should You Buy a Secondhand Gas Hedge Trimmer?

Should you buy a used gas hedge trimmer? Generally when buying secondhand whether it be tools or appliances, there is normally no guarantee on them which means you can not take them back if they refuse to work. If you buy your used gas hedge trimmer from a chainsaw or lawnmower dealer, it may be have been traded in by the seller who has upgraded to a new model and the dealer may offer you a warranty with it and if you are lucky, it might have been fully serviced.

Where Can I Buy
For obvious reasons a dealer would be the best place to buy, they often have trade in units for sale and usually at a reduced price. Ask them if they will give you a warranty, a thirty day warranty will give you some peace of mind. Other places to search for secondhand gas hedge trimmers include the classified section of your newspaper, message boards at your local mall, also look at second hand goods stores and pawn shops - often these places are great for getting bargains.

You can also buy online, head over to your favorite search engine such as Yahoo or Google and look for secondhand or used gas hedge trimmers, also browse the listings on sites such as eBay. Amazon is well worth looking at, as often they will have refurbished units for sale with a warranty at a fraction of the cost of a new unit and quite often include free shipping.

What Do I Need To Look For
Take a close look at the condition and appearance, this will give you an indication of whether the owner has looked after the unit or not. Check the wear on the handles as this will quite often give you an idea of the age of the unit. Look a the make and model numbers - often an online search of those will give you an idea of the age of the tool and also any issues to be aware of with that particular model.

Inspect the blades closely, see if they have been correctly sharpened and the cutting angle of the blade is correct and not worn - also look for nicks in the blades. Dull or worn blades are dangerous and can cause the hedge trimmer to jam when in use.

Make sure the seller demonstrates the hedge trimmer working, check to make sure it starts easily, no more than one or two pulls on the chord with the choke engaged and the engine should start. If it does not start easily, it could mean issues such as spark problems or something more serious such as electronic ignition faults.

Test the blade lock mechanism if the tool has one fitted - with the blade lock activated the blades should not move and the engine should idle easily. Let the engine warm up first and then rev the engine, listening for strange noises and observing exhaust emissions. Two stroke engines do emit a bit of smoke, but this should not be excessive. Excessive smoke could be an indication of an incorrect fuel to oil mix or something more serious. Check the shutoff switches making sure they do in fact turn off the engine when engaged. Also check for any vibrations in the tool when running, most newer models have anti-vibration features built in.

Buying Considerations
What is the price of the second hand hedge trimmer - is it fair and relative to the age and condition of the machine? How does it compare to the price of a new one?

Always try and negotiate, you may be surprised, often people just really want to get rid of second hand items. Be also aware that you have no idea of the internal condition of the engine of the unit, you may buy it and two days after the purchase the engine may stop, requiring expensive repairs or replacement.

The home handyman range of gas hedge trimmers should give you 1 to 2 years of service and the commercial models 2 to 3 years of work before needing major repairs.

Another option you have when buying second hand (especially from some one local in your area) , ask if they mind you taking the hedge trimmer into your local chainsaw dealer who will give you a professional opinion and an idea of what you should be paying for the unit.

Remember buy carefully and happy trimming.

How to Build a Flagstone Patio

!±8± How to Build a Flagstone Patio

Flagstone patios are creating elegant and give the area a sense of ease, are not in brick or concrete. It may also be more durable and require little maintenance for their return. Unlike wood decks or terraces, there is no need to worry about rot, and in contrast to bricks and mortar, you'd better look over and dyed.

Basic tips

When building a paved courtyard, there are some things to keep in mind. Best, the terraces are longer defined in the rulesand and / or gravel. Some people may choose to use a cement mortar or a foundation. While nice for the first year, it still plays up, and the concrete and mortar to crumble and break even faster base of gravel and sand. Then, when it's time to get concrete and mortar repair the foundations, the terrace must be whole and new cards must be purchased.

The best materials for the job are, of course sand and decomposed granite. Although notHow paved with crushed gravel, limestone gravel, or crushed concrete is to work well. However, ensure that you are over sand or sand instead of rounded beach sand from the multi-faceted, the grains of sand, the less likely they are to hold together.

Optimally, Granite Excavation better. It acts like cement, which is not pursuing the house and not tears. As an added bonus, provides excellent protection against weeds. Granite flooring withstands immersion andChange better than any other material. Gravel is usually cheaper than granite gravel gravel or other. Maybe even for free granite gravel from local quarries, or granite processing plant are local compost yards. It is worthwhile to shop around.

Build your Flagstone Patio: Supplies you need

Accessories:

or gravel (preferably crushed granite)
or sand (of course, recommended for installation)
Flagstone or (more often is longer)
o A pair of 2x4 cardssufficient for the project
o You can also consist of metal or plastic edges
or landscape cloth
Floor marking spray paint, or biodegradable
Landscape or stone or plastic edging

Tools:

or wheelbarrow
Spade or Flat
or shovel round
or metal rake
or Level
or Leveler
tampering
or water hose
or Chisel
and Mallet
Gloves or
or eye protection (wear during braking Stone)
walking boots or steel (protection from falling objects)
A broom or shopand a light broom
or at least an assistant

First you must measure your deck and shop for the stone slab. Make sure you buy enough to fully open the area with some additional safeguards. You must be calculated to fill enough sand and gravel at least twice the depth of your pavers are. This means that if you are using 2-inch pieces, it is necessary to dig 6 inches and at least 2 cm of gravel and 2 inches of sand. If you live in an extremely drylike a desert, or were pure granite sand or soil, then a foundation with a depth of two inches should be fine.

You must also decide the shape, depth and style of both your and your patio pavers. Flagstone pavers in a variety of colors and you can find pre-cut tiles, lined or smooth edges. Pre-cut panels are large, they were together in a uniform way, cuddly. Many people like the rustic look for the uncut versions, but they require a sense of creativity andpreferably a technique for assembling a jigsaw puzzle together in a similar way. Pre-cut is knurled plates even beautiful the way they fit together better as a rule and they still have a natural look to them.

Build your patio: Step by Step

1 Once the terrace measured and acquired the necessary amount of gravel, sand and paving stones, its time to dig. I hope you now have the size and shape you want the patio and have bounded interval. This step is easy. If you have a square or rectangular courtyard, fitted out accordingly. If you want a terrace round or irregular in shape, just use spray paint to mark where you want to be on the edge of the patio.

Now for the fun part ...

2 Start to dig you. With the flat spade to dig into the ground, cut the required depth around the edge of the silhouette terrace. Then, start removing the soil with a spade round. Place this land on a towel or other designated body. Further excavationthe foundation is dug in the area. If you are planning to build a raised terrace, you still need to dig the soil to a point where it is.

3 If you are on the terrace into a building, make sure that the surface slopes away from the building so that water to escape from the building, rather than on him. Otherwise, make sure you have a plan level. It 'important that the company is well below the terrace as much as possible and tamped down.Irregularities or air bubbles is guaranteed trouble down the road.

4 Now put the landscape fabric on the floor. Be sure to leave enough extra for the edges overlap. Then you will surely have excavated material from the board.

5 If you are unsure of wood or other material that the edges of the top layer of wood with the bottom edges of the stone. You may have to dig a little '. You can alternate with the edge of the wood as the last, just make sure it is level withthe ground around it. The 2x4 will be used to screed below. If you use and landscape edging stone, the material may not be necessary or 2x4 board.

6 Gravel place evenly over the surface of the tissue landscape and take your 2x4 and use it as a device substrate. At this point it is useful to have an assistant, as they may be across the court and help her level. Make sure your gravel is very flat. Compress it if necessary and fill any air pockets or holes. If you use the crushed granite, stone, sand or course alone, then you should only need about 1 ½ times as deep as your slab of rock. If you, too, of course, with sand as a layer, you can set on the granite wet and leave it overnight for at least 12 hours. This requires, and it's like to work on concrete. If you're not with the sand, then skip this step.

7 Once you have your base of gravel, sand, or both, and made sure that it has certain level, then it is timeto start laying the flooring. It's up to you if you start on one side, the edge or center. Generally, when working with large stones, pre-cut stones, or want to make sure you have an advantage over, you better start in the middle of a courtyard or at one end of the promenade. If you want a natural boundary, then pull it really does not matter where you begin to chisel the edges far enough back so that they are all the basics and not on earth, where they will be more.

8As you lay your stones, you must use a level and add sand or gravel beneath them or remove them if necessary. If there are air pockets under rocks or rock or wiggle, they are bad wear. Make sure all the pieces are. If you put your stones closer to penetrate will need less water and fewer long-term maintenance. Just be sure to leave enough space to allow water to infiltrate or blend.

9 When you arrive at the edgesBe sure to wear safety glasses. If you need to cut stones to fit, and then only slightly rippled edge on both sides of the stone, where you happen to open the rest. Once the groove is deep enough, then you put the rock down so that the edge will be broken hanging over the edge and gently tap the edge with the mallet. Should snap easily.

10 Having laid your stone, it is time to Malta. If your pieces far enough from crushed granite, or you're leftThe use of choice in fine granite sand or any type of sand, of course, you should sweep into the cracks and fill it completely. You may need to fill in cracks and water again.

Be sure to keep some 11 'of sand or gravel to fill the hand, from time to time. If you often use in rainy and humid, and freezing and thawing, heaving will live. Rolling is easier to handle if you use natural sand or crushed granite in Malta or against normalCement. If you decided to go with the concept of cement and mortar, to be sure, the products that use it with rock terraces used.

12 The maintenance is simple. If a stone to come out of place or moved in any way, simply by temperature down and add more sand or gravel to level again. Fill cracks and re-wet the area. One can expect that the maintenance of the terrace to take this once or twice a year in areas of heavy rolling and less in dry, hot climates. This smallExtra care is worth it.

Flagstone Why?

Flagstone can last 20 years or more, if installed properly. And 'known to withstand heavy traffic areas and endure the abuse itself, trucks and equipment. Some people have reported slab maintaining their duration from 30 to 50 years or more. If properly cared for, will last slab of concrete, asphalt and stone. In addition to its longevity record is beautiful and elegant stone. Setting yourSheet correctly and with the right materials, you can expect your patio paved add beauty and elegance to your outdoor space until late in the near future. In addition, as an added bonus, the same terrace, you are putting "sweat equity" in your home. Not only save a lot of money on the labor market, but will also add value to your home.
